2011 Fishing regulations for Fawcett Lake (abbriviated version)

Fawcett Lake & tributaries –
Walleye limit 3 over 50 cm; Pike limit 3 over 63 cm; Perch limit 15; Lake Whitefish limit 10; Burbot limit 10. The portion north and east of a line drawn from the MD boat launch in SE12-73-26-W4 to the point of land in SE11-73-26-W4 including the Mink River, Fawcett (Howard) River and the areas locally known as the narrows and east basin OPEN July 1 to Feb. 28 and CLOSED Mar. 1 to June 30. The remainder of the lake OPEN May 20 to Mar. 31 and CLOSED Apr. 1 to May 19. All tributaries and outlet CLOSED Nov. 1 to May 31. Fawcett lake was named for Sidney Dawson Fawcett, a Dominion Land Surveyor who surveyed the 19th Baseline in 1912.
Mean depth: 5.6 metres (18 feet)
Maximum depth: 21.3 metres (70 feet)
The major water body of Fawcett Lake is contained in an area approximately 11.2 kilometers in an east / west direction and 1.6 kilometers in a north / south direction.
Surface area: 3,415 Hectares (8,438 Acres)
Fawcett Lakes shoreline is 54 kilometers in length.
Fawcett Lake is approximately 610 meters above sea level
The Provincial campground on the west end of the lake is located on land originally cleared for a millsite in 1939. German prisoners of war worked at this millsite from 1943 to 1945.
Thirteen sandy beaches exist on Fawcett Lake with four located along the south shore. These vary in size with the major ones included in Alberta Forest Service Recreation Sites and Fawcett Lake Resort.
Aquatic vegitation consists of: Pondweed (Potamogeton spp), Yellow pond lilly (Nuphar variegatum), Bur-reed (Sparganium angustifolium), arrowhead (Sagittaria cuneata), cat tail (Typha latifolia), water horsetail and bullrush.

Free fishing weekends for 2011 are scheduled for the following dates:

February 18-20, 2012
July 9-10

On these dates, Albertans and visitors alike can fish without a licence on any public water body that

has an open fishing season
does not lie within a National Park

This is the perfect opportunity for curious Albertans to try out this traditional pastime without having to purchase a fishing licence.
